The Story

Trevor chewed the meat eagerly, the warmth of the food spreading from his stomach to his extremities. Except for the headache he was feeling much better.

The snap of a twig announced Azari's return with her horse and tilting his head upward the Knight regarded her with a curious eye. She was even more lovely than when he had first observed her earlier. Perhaps it was the color returned to her cheeks by the roaring fire or just the fact that she was close by. At any rate, Trevor could not keep his eyes off her.

Ainsley was aware of Selene's presence close by. Acutely aware. Her soft eyes had been so tender and caring as she had tended to his needs earlier. 'Great', Trevor thought. 'Two beautiful women fussing over me. What would Lorelei think?' Although there had never been any claims made by the young lady whose life he had saved some time ago from bandits, he still felt a bit guilty about the current situation and his reaction to seeing Azari.

Realizing that he was once again staring at the girl in question, he shook himself from his reveries and invited her to join him.

"Please, sit by the fire. I'm sure there's more meat. You must be very hungry. Shouldn't try traveling on an empty stomach." He turned to Selene, "Would you please fetch some of that delicious venison for our guest?"

He saw the expression on the young royal's aristocratic face and pleaded with his eyes. Selene pouted, but did as he had requested. Trevor returned his attention to Azari and smiled warmly.

"Please pardon my behavior. I was staring at you because you look so familiar. I realize that must sound like a poor pickup line used in some seedy pub, but it's true. You see, some time ago I had a dream. You were in my dream and you pleaded with me to train you as a Knight of Torrigan. I hope I do not sound absurd, but the dream was quite vivid." Trevor tilted his head somewhat, which was a mistake as pain shot through it. He winced and asked, "I just wonder if perhaps we had met before? That might explain the dream." He held up his hand indicating he was all right.

Selene did get Azari some of the venison, but dropped it into the other's hands instead of handing it to her, and turned, obviously making up her mind that the other woman wasn't worthy of her time.

Trevor seemed to be focused on Azari and not really at all aware that Selene even existed, which kind of irked her since she used to being the center of attention, so she went over to Trevor's horse. The animal was still fully tacked, and when Selene ran her hands over the warm fur, she could feel its fatigue. A little angry for no obvious reason, at least not to her, she pulled the saddle bags off the horse, her teal eyes stormy. Ignoring the goosebumps raised on her arms from the chill cold that cut through her thin shirt, she reached under and unbuckled the saddle girth, shoving the saddle from the horse's back. The horse pranced, obviously relieved to be free of the heavy burden.

She led the horse over to a small patch of long emerald green grass and pulled the bridle off, standing next to the horse and stroking it while it grazed.

She sighed, looking up at the stars, her chestnut curls a pale auburn in the moonlight. "Hm.. a full moon..." She sighed again and glanced at the fire, knowing she should probably go over, for safety reasons, but not really wanting to.

She leaned against the horse, borrowing its body heat as well as its company.

"Kestri?" Kestri peeked her head up, looking at Jenra, who was lying against Silverstrike's side, gazing up at the sky.

"Yes Jen?"

"When do you think my brother will get back?"

Kestri blinked at Jenra in surprise; Jenra had just asked her that question a few minutes ago. Kestri began to laugh, and Jenra blushed. "I'm sorry! It's just that he left when I was so young.. And I've been living all this time thinking all my friends and family were dead and I was the only Darkecat left that it's .. I just can't get used to the fact that my brother is back! I don't know whether to scream at him or hug him. I mean, he left.. I don't know why he left. Mum would never tell me.. But I know that he did leave and that hurt. We were so close when we were younger." She sighed and looked back where her brother and his party had disappeared.

"But Jen, .. He went outside the Forest! No elf in their right mind goes out of the Forest.. ever! Who knows what's happened to him, how he's change.." Kestri said, chewing her lip worriedly. Jenra looked at her and laughed.

Silverstrike raised his head. <Someone is coming.>

"Tal?" Jen' asked almost immediately, but Kestri 'ssshh'ed her and they stood silent for a few moments.

"Jenra Darkecat! You get your lazy limbs over here and help me with this load.. You too Kes, You both should be ashamed of yourself..." Lerat yelled at them both, and with a laugh, they rose to relieve the young elf from his burdens. He had been carrying several leaf pamplets of food sent over by his mother to feed them, as she'd heard about the troubles.

"What do you make of this trouble with all the unexplained murders?" Lerat asked, his eyes shining as they locked on Jenra, who was quietly eating her food. Jenra looked at him stonily.

"I think something's wrong." Kestri said after a moment. "No," she amended, "I KNOW something is wrong. I can't think of a time when there hasn't been a single murder. Something's wrong, .. something is going to happen that someone doesn't want happening..."

Jenra and Lerat stared at her. "I hope Tal gets back soon..." Jenra said nervously. "I'll feel better with him around."

"The fire feels nice," said Azari taking in a deep breath looking up at the full moon, "I almost think I see heaven when I look at the moon." Trevor still engaged in his trance of her beauty noticed that her deep green eyes reflected the glow of the fire, the moon made her face creamy and smooth. He had never seen such beauty. He could not stop himself from looking as he studied the way the fire made dancing shadows on her long wispy auburn hair. Trevor believed that she was even more beautiful in person than in his dreams. "Trevor? hello? Earth to the young knight, hello?" Azari smiling with laughter in her voice. "Where were you just then?" Azari was playfully curious.

"Oh ..please pardon my behavior. I was staring at you because you look familiar to me." Trevor's voice apologetic. He began to explain his reasons for looking. Azari noticed that he was not well yet. "You're squinting your eyes and holding your head funny, Are you certain you are all right?" Together they both laughed a bit. Staring face to face and eye to eye, the silent quietness filled the air as if no one were around. "I just wonder if perhaps we had met before? That might explain the dream I told you about." Trevor asked while in pain as it shot through his head again. He held up his hand indicating it was all right so that she would know he would be fine.

"You're serious, aren't you?" Azari sat up composing herself after a few drinks of ale and much time spent talking "I've never met you before." You don't even look familiar to me- sorry." She met his eye with her last word before she turned to look to the ground with a sad smile.

"You know what? It doesn't really matter, we have to meet now!" Azari reached up to grab Trevor by his arm. She practically ripped his socket out by insisting he get up off the ground. "There! that's better. Now...Sir Knight Trevor, it is an honor to meet such a brave young man. Allow me to introduce myself in return." Azari staggering from the ale getting to her body. She looked pathetic as she almost fell backwards spurting out silly little things. It was clear to Trevor she had too much to drink.

"I-I no. Wait! It's coming to me." Azari put her arms up a bit as she began to laugh hardly. "I'm queen of the stars and guardian of the moon." Azari stepped back a few feet to do a curtsey and fell right on her butt.

"Well Trevor, perhaps I'll give it some more thought before I answer your question. I had better get some sleep before it's too late." Without even thinking about it she kissed him on the forehead and patted him on the shoulders to gesture a small insignificant way of her approval of entertainment for the evening. Azari would be seriously embarrassed by tomorrow, if she could recall any of it.
